Girl Charlee Fabrics Knitty News :: Wardrobe Essentials Part 1

Happy New Year!  We are excited to start the New Year with an all new blog series - Knit-tastic Wardrobe Essentials.  This month we'll be reviewing some basic knit wardrobe essentials to help you create a well-balanced and complete handmade wardrobe that is wearable for the year!  To start we have the most basic essential for everyones closet - A Simple Tee.

T-shirts are most definitely the most basic of a wardrobe, but also the most important pieces.  They are perfect to wear year-round and can be paired with shorts in the summer and easily layered above and below long sleeves and sweaters for the spring, fall, and winter.  I love to sew my own t-shirts as I can mix and match different solid and printed fabrics in unique and unexpected ways, as well as making a top that has the perfect fit.  If you've never made one before, a simple tee is much easier to sew than you'd expect, and can be customized however you want. Here are a few of our favorite t-shirt tutorials to help get you started ::

Fun Women's Tee Tutorial from iCandy Handmade

If you're looking for a indie pattern to sew up, The Girl Charlee Pattern Shop is full several Women's Tees Patterns!  There are many options to choose from - traditional fit, raglan, dolman, and more.  Below are a few of our favorites ::

For your new tee, we recommend starting your fabric search with cotton jersey and cotton lycra knits.  These are light to medium weight fabrics with good stretch, soft drape, and ample recovery.  Depending on the look you are going for, you can play with different prints, solids, and stripes.  A few of my picks from the store ::

Next week we will focus on Wardrobe Essential Part 2 - Sweaters!

Happy sewing!
