
For this project, Elles does suggest using a serger if you have one, as it creates a stretchable finished seam, but you can also use a zig zag (or other stretch) stitch on your regular sewing machine. Before starting, be sure to practice on a test swatch of fabric to figure out your perfect settings.
For this shirt you need a knit with at least 25% stretch. I would recommend starting your search with cotton jersey, cotton lycra, french terry, and ponte de roma knits. A few of my picks from the store:
