Tutorial Tuesday :: DIY Maxi Dress from While Camden Sleeps

For this week's tutorial, we have this DIY Maxi Dress from Kara Metta of While Camden Sleeps. Originally sewn as knit bridesmaids dresses for her friend's wedding, these will be worn again and again because they are just so comfortable to wear. This classic dress silhouette can easily be dressed up or down for different occasions. If you're creating a formal dress try adding a stretch lace overlay over a solid knit, or you can use a fun print if you're making a more casual everyday dress. Enjoy!

To draft her pattern pieces, Kara used fitted garments from her wardrobe with the help of this video from Modern Girl Sewing. What I love most about this tutorial is that the instructions are incredibly easy to follow. Images like the one below demonstrate each step, and there are no zippers or buttons, just a few simple pattern pieces stitched together.

To recreate this dress you could use any stretch knit fabric, like a cotton jersey or a cotton lycra. I recommend searching for a fabric with at least 25% stretch, as it will be pulled over your head for wear. A few of my picks from the store:
We hope you enjoy this tutorial! We love to see what you sew up so please send 1-2 images of any project you make with Girl Charlee Fabrics to gcblog@girlcharlee.com and you might see your creation featured in our next Knit Picks!

Happy Sewing!
