Girl Charlee Fabrics Knitty News :: Wardrobe Essentials Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of our Knit-tastic Wardrobe Essentials blog series!  Throughout the month of January, Girl Charlee Fabrics is previewing some basic knit wardrobe essentials to help you create a well-balanced, and complete, handmade wardrobe that is wearable for the entire year.   Last week we started with a simple tee, and today we bring you a staple layering piece - The Sweater and Cardigan.

What I love most about sweaters and cardigans is that they are perfect for layering on top of tanks or tee's to provide warmth and mega style.  There is nothing worse than overdressing for climates with cold temperatures in the morning and then warm in the afternoon, so topping a lighter weight blouse  with a basic cardigan or slouchy sweater, and you are covered for all temps!

Best of all is that sewing your own sweater and cardigan is very easy and enjoyable. Experiment  with all the available types of Hacci, french terry, sweatshirt, and drapey cotton spandex blends of fabrics along with different styles of sweaters and cardigans and you can create many different looks for your wardrobe. Below are a few of our favorite sweater tutorials to help get you started ::

Slouchy Sweater Tutorial from With Wendy

Depending on the style of sweater you are making and how lightweight or heavyweight you want it to be, we suggest using hacci sweater knitsponte de romafrench terry, and spandex blends.  A few of my picks from the store ::

If you're looking for a sewing pattern to follow, The Girl Charlee Pattern Shop is full of many indie patterns that would be perfect for making your new sweater!  Below are a few of our favorites ::

Next we will focus on Wardrobe Essential Part 3 - Pencil Skirts!

Happy sewing!

  1. A good list, but it's missing one of my favorites - Swoon's Scarf Neck Cardigan. Kid and adult sizes, and free!
