One of my favorite things about Fall weather is getting the chance to sew up some patterns in our sweater Hacci, sweatshirt, and heavier types of knit fabrics. Jess from the The Sewing Rabbit has an amazing tutorial that uses a sweater knit fabric to make an Oh So Comfy Sweater Dress! This project is perfect for chilly, fall weather and best of all it can be completed without a pattern.
Jess gives some helpful tips on working with knit fabrics. Her first suggestion is to figure out which way your fabric stretches before starting the sewing process. This can be done by stretching your fabric from left to right, then again from up to down. You want to make sure when cutting your fabric that you cut with the stretch going from left to right, so the finished item will give you the ease you need when you put it on!
Jess is able to make this dress without a pattern by simply using a t-shirt. She suggests finding one that fits just right- not too tight, but not too loose. Lay the shirt on top of your knit fabric, fold, and cut along the bodice pattern.
This dress will look great in a light to mid weight sweater knit fabric. Try our Hacci Sweater Knit Fabrics, or a heavier knit like a Ponte De Roma or a Sweatshirt.
We hope you enjoy this tutorial and please send 1-2 images of any project you make with Girl Charlee Fabrics to firstname.lastname@example.org and you might see your creation featured in our next KnitPicks!
