Tutorial Tuesday :: Easy Gathered Skirt by It's Always Autumn

For this weeks Tutorial Tuesday, we bring you what we think is THE perfect skirt sewing tutorial! The very talented Autumn Baldwin of It's Always Autumn put together this sewing tutorial for a lovely, figure-flattering full gathered skirt. What I love most about this skirt is that it can be worn with just about anything, making it a wardrobe essential for any woman's closet.
To gather the top of your skirt, sew two rows of gathering stitches around the top of the skirt. When sewing these gathering stitches, it's important not to backstitch over the beginning or the end and to leave a long tail. Then, you can pull at the threads to gather the fabric together. You'll want to move the gathers along as you pull so that they will be evenly dispersed.
Pin and sew your waistband along the outside of your skirt. For the most professional looking gathers, be sure to sew the waistband in between your two rows of gathering stitches. To get your elastic into your waistband, use a large safety pin to thread it through. With a flat, elastic waistband and no zippers or closures, this is sure to be one of your most comfortable skirts.
Autumn looks absolutely adorable in her new skirt! In her own words- "I love it! More clothes that feel like pajamas, but look pretty cute."
Best of all is that this skirt would be stellar made with a knit!  A light to medium weight knit like our cotton spandex is perfect for this skirt. For Autumn's look, use one of our lovely cotton solids, or try something new with a fun print. A few of my knit and specialty woven picks from the store:
We hope you enjoy this tutorial and please send 1-2 images of any project you make with Girl Charlee Fabrics to gcblog@girlcharlee.com and you might see your creation featured in our next KnitPicks!

Happy sewing!
