Tutorial Tuesday :: The Playdate Dress by Craftiness is not Optional

We love it around here when we find tutorials on ideas inspired by store-bought items as NOTHING is more rewarding than making something on your own, especially when it turns out even better than that original item!  Take for example our Tutorial Tuesday pick this week, the Playdate Dress Tutorial from Jessica Christian from Craftiness is not Optional.  Jess has some great pointers in the tutorial on where to look to make your own changes (i.e. the size of the neckline, how much gathering on the shoulders, how to design the pocket) along with the most important part: Have FUN with it!
Jess has a very helpful tip regarding seam allowance that we want to point out. From the very beginning, when tracing a fitted shirt for the pattern, make sure that you add seam allowances on the side of the shirt, the armhole, and the shoulder seam. Jess says that she usually adds 3/8"-1/2".
Don't forget to add a little extra room on top of the sleeve for a gathering as Jess did for that extra personalized styling.  We love it!

Most t-shirt knits, like cotton jersey and cotton jersey blends, work perfectly here. A few of my picks from the store:
We hope you enjoy this tutorial and please send 1-2 images of any project you make with Girl Charlee Fabrics to gcblog@girlcharlee.com and you might see your creation featured in our next KnitPicks!

Happy sewing!
