Tutorial Tuesday :: Striped Bias Skirt with FREE Sewing Pattern from Craftiness Is Not Optional

Back to school season is fast approaching us, and in my search for some new wardrobe essentials, I stumbled across this adorable Striped Bias Skirt Tutorial that includes a FREE Sewing Pattern from Jess of Craftiness Is Not Optional. As an added bonus, the sewing pattern comes in 5 different sizes (18m - 8/9), making it the perfect pattern to last for several years to come! This skirt is so simple to sew and so cute to wear, that you'll want to sew it again and again.  Best of all is that Jess created this skirt pattern and tutorial for Skirting the Issue, an amazing event that Simple Simon & Co. host every year, where everyone is invited to sew up skirts for local foster centers.  A great cause for sure!

Ever wondered how to do a bias cut with stripes?  Jess has some great images that show how when cutting the front pieces, do so on the bias (at a forty five degree angle) while lining up the stripes. This will create the cool, graphic directional arrows on the skirt.  Thank you Jess!

Most knit fabrics with stretch, like Cotton Lycra or Ponte de Roma, would be perfect for sewing up this skirt. A few of my picks from the store:
We hope you enjoy this tutorial! We love to see what you sew up so please send 1-2 images of any project you make with Girl Charlee Fabrics to gcblog@girlcharlee.com and you might see your creation featured in our next KnitPicks!

Happy sewing!

  1. I think I’m willing to give this a try . . . it looks great. I haven’t sewn for myself before, just my daughter (who, now 8, declared to me last night that she wants to learn to sew all her own clothes, just like the colonial girls did, so we’d better get going on those sewing lessons). Thank you for sharing.
