Tutorial Tuesday :: Customizing the Womens Metro T-shirt by Liesl + Co

I love comfy, cozy t-shirts.  They are comfortable, they go with most everything, they can be dressed up or down.  T-shirts are a staple in every wardrobe, but finding the perfect fit can be challenging.  The answer?  Make your own!  We just happen to have the perfect t-shirt pattern that allows you to customize with different fabrics to create the perfect custom tee.
We teamed up with pattern designer and amazing sewist Liesl Gibson of Liesl + Co to use our fabrics and make this great tutorial on customizing her Women's Metro T-Shirt into this lovely high-low hem, A-line, color-blocked shirt in just 8 simple steps. I cannot wait to sew my own version!
Liesl shows us in step 2 of the tutorial how to bring in the side seam of the top to see a hint of the back fabric in the front view, creating a slimming effect that is super stylish.  Brilliant!
As for the high-low style, this is created by drawing an S-curve along the side. As Liesl mentions, it is important to do this part in pencil before committing to any specific curve. You may need to erase and do it again until you're happy with the results. Once you've settled on your S-curve, don't forget to add seam allowances here.
As Liesl shows mixing cotton jersey fabric with a cotton spandex fabric produces great results!  A few of my picks from the store:
We hope you enjoy this tutorial and please send 1-2 images of any project you make with Girl Charlee Fabrics to gcblog@girlcharlee.com and you might see your creation featured in our next KnitPicks!

Happy sewing!

  1. I just got my new dress today and it fits perfect except in the butt, had to bring it in slightly. I bought it for a party and everybody loved it. I will definitely order again from these guys.
