As we are now carrying some amazing lace fabrics in the store I thought a great tutorial for this week would be how to make a lace top. Lace tops are all over the place and are the it item for spring and summer. Hanna Paal of Pearls and Scissors has a wonderful Romantic Lace T-Shirt Tutorial that illustrates just how easy it is to make a t-shirt with a beautiful lace insert. Says Hanna, "This t-shirt turned out to be the most comfortable t-shirt I own." I can't wait to try it out!
Hanna's tutorial follows a numerical system to illustrate the step-by-step directions. She also points out that "when using jersey fabrics, especially lace, it's always a good idea to reinforce the shoulder seams to prevent them from stretching out." That's a great tip with these types of fabrics.
There are so many lace sewing tutorials out there. Here are just a few from It's Always Autumn, Transient Expression, and Yellow Suitcase Studios.

We hope you enjoy this tutorial and please send 1-2 images of any project you make with Girl Charlee Fabrics to gcblog@girlcharlee.com and you might see your creation featured in our next KnitPicks!
Happy sewing!

Oh wow! Beautiful! Love this!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I love lace in tops like that. I've never sewn with it though. I'm assuming you just treat it like any other knit? Will have to give it a try sometime :)
ReplyDeleteHi Nat! Yes they sew up just like regular knits. The tutorial suggests reinforcing some seams like shoulders so they don't stretch out which is a good idea with lace knits. Have fun sewing these up :)
DeleteSo what is your suggestion for reinforcing? Like an elastic"tape" or...?
ReplyDeleteHi Becky! Reinforcing would be using a double or triple stitch if you machine has it, if not just sew back over it again with your straight stitch :)
